RIBA and the Sterling Prize

Edwards Cheshire products are being installed in some great projects. The 2008 RIBA Sterling Prize went to The Accordia housing project in Cambridge. This features our 14mm 2-Ply satin lacquered Oak and 14mm 2-Ply sain lacquered American Black Walnut. Congratulations to all involved!

Beauty without compromise

Illegal timber is pre-dominatantly transported by trucks to Russian-Chinese border crossings and also to southern sea ports, both for transport to China and Japan. Themost illegal logging in the RFE occurs in this area, at 50-70 percent of harvesting. Some experts estimate that it has the highest rates of illegal logging in Russia." "Illegally Logged Timber (prohibition of Sale and Distribution) Bill. A bill tomake it an offence for any importer or distributer to sell or distribute in the United Kingdomany wood harvested,manufactured or otherwise dealt with illegally in the country fromwhich the wood originates or through which it was passed or was transhipped: and for connected purposes."

" Distributer"means any person who, for professional and commercial purposes, irrespective of the selling technique, A)manufactures and sells wood, B) sells woodmanufactured by another person, C) imports or exports wood into the United Kingdom.

Conclusion: 600 football pitches ofmostly Oak flooring fromChina have been imported into the UK in the first 6 months of 2008. The pre-dominant source of the rawmaterial used to produce this is Russian. Up to 70% of Russian Oak is harvested illegally. A government bill has had its first reading that willmake the offence, of selling wood products (including Bamboo) produced using illegally harvested wood, result in imprisonment for up to 5 years or a fine not exceeding £100,000 or both in respect to each offence.

Edwards Cheshire have over 150 FSC or PEFC officially certifiedWood floors in our range, we will be introducing an "environmental guarantee" that will cover all of our wood floors in our 2009 range.
